Out and About.

Out and About’s mission is to enhance Island life for people of all ages, while increasing footfall for local businesses. The social enterprise sought a strategic partner to help them reimagine the way Islanders could engage with hospitality and retail outlets through the use of technology.

Out and About wanted to build both a site and app which directly connected local businesses with users in order for them to book experiences.

A user experience that would allow users to easily browse and explore offers that appealed to them was vital to the success of this platform.

Each business on the platform needed to have a profile as well as directions to the location, opening times, clickable contact numbers along with more personalised information such as accessibility facilities and dietary requirement options.

Participating businesses also needed data-driven insights on their offers to help them identify customer demographics for the purposes of smart retargeting on future offers.

Using Adobe XD to carefully plan the user experience we ensured the platform’s users were able to discover interesting places, buy tickets for events & activities, and read interesting articles written by local experts.

With a design in place, we built a Progressive Web Application that operates and appears like an app on a relevant device. As part of the build, we were able to integrate google maps directions, clickable phone numbers, and other key information that would help users book their chosen experience.

The application required zero downtime and so we built the site on a Linux infrastructure that employs a load balancer acting as a reverse proxy to distribute traffic across a number of servers to increase the capacity of concurrent users.

Implementing a monitoring service called Zabbix we are able to have a view of the cloud level infrastructure and application-level health. This ensured the site ran smoothly while also allowing us to forecast growth in cloud storage space keeping costs low while having visibility that allowed us to forecast growth.
